My Royal Enfield Shotgun And Me

Toms adventures with his morotcycle

Hi, my name is Tom, and I picked up my Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 1 year and 8 months ago.The Shotgun was my first big bike coming from a Keeway K-Light that I bought from Newcombe's. I wanted a bike that wouldn't feel daunting to a newer rider but that I could tour on and daily, so comfort and usable power was key. After touring over the UK, joining the 'Ace Café ride out' twice, visiting Calne for the '2025 Calne Bike Meet', multiple camping trips, tours around Norfolk and the Cotswolds and daily riding the bike to work, I feel like I've picked a bike that was ready to tick all the boxes I needed.I'll get the obvious out the way, she is a heavy bike, but all the weight feels so low that it has never been a problem, and I think the weight stops the bike from ever feeling skittish and is therefore very planted to the road. The seating position is neutral, I feel like I'm sat on a chair most of the time, but the wonderful thing about the Shotgun is you can adapt to it's shape very easily. On a long tour you can shift your weight multiple times to keep comfy, if you're on a long stretch of road you can have a lean back and cruise, but as soon as you're on the twisties you can lean tight and have fun around the corners (I have found my pegs a few times!). It really makes this bike feel adaptable, a jack of all trades. So far, the modifications I've made have been the bar end mirrors, the LED indicators, the wind shield, some Mistral exhausts and pannier racks to hold my Oxford Aqua P32 bags that I got from Newcombe's. With the Shotgun coming with a rear rack under the seat this means I can go from solo touring mode to fun weekends away with a pillion.Talking of a pillion, the Shotgun sits at motorway speeds easily with a pillion on the back and even has room to still pull which helps whilst overtaking. I think a lot of people see the 47bhp and think that sounds low, but the bike has so much soul and grunt and uses that power in a way that is never boring.Sometimes I look at other bikes, like a dedicated touring bike, or a retro bike, or maybe a fun weekend bike, and each time I realise I have a bike that does all these things already at an amazing cost.A final input from me would be a bike can go only as far if it is maintained, and I have no regrets purchasing from Newcombe's. Every time I need help it is offered, every time I have a question, I learn something new and every time I walk in the door it feels like talking to friends. It's a reassuring thing knowing your pride and joy is looked after with people that also have that same sense of pride and joy, it makes the world of motorcycling very enjoyable and well worth it.
